Holidays
Finally the holidays are here
Strathmore schools will end 2007 with heads high. Reaching the last 16 of the Bell Lawrie Plate, defeating big teams like Ellon and Dalziel and putting in strong performances against champions Bell Baxter and an unlucky draw against Linlithgow. Strathmore Schools were never expected to make it past round 1 of the Cup in their 1st year but have proved all critics wrong.
There has been a great surge in numbers at training and we hope this will continue and people keep turning up to training and hopefully there hard work will pay off when the win a cap for the team.
We are well on the way to getting a new set off strips thanks to Mr Caddell and his sponsored cycle, a big thanks to him.
2008 look to bring some promising fixtures against Aberdeen Grammar and Brechin High and the possibility of a game against Ellon and Dalziel after they were impressed by our performance.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and go easy on the turkey, pies and drink as training will hopefully commence the 1st week back.

Mr Caddell's Cycle
On a cold morning, Mr Caddell departed Inverness and arrived in Fort William eleven and a half hours later.
Mr Caddell collected sponsors and the money will go towards the Strathmore Schools Rugby Fund. It’s not too late to give a donation and a reminder to all who have sponsored him to please hand your money to Mrs Caddell.
Well done to Mr Caddell and thanks on behalf of the team, it shows anything can be done if you put your mind to it.
Strathmore Schools v Linlithgow Academy Report
Strathmore Schools started off strong and won 8 penalties in the 1st minute due to lack of discipline from Linlithgow. After a long 5 minutes of 0-0, Gary slotted over a penalty to give Strathmore a 3-0 lead. However this was short lived as Linlithgow piled on pressure in attack and scored a try, adding a conversion to make it 3-7 to the guests. Linlithgow then had a man sin binned which allowed Strathmore to put Linlithgow on the back foot. But Strathmore took a blow as Duncan Hampton had to leave the pitch due to a leg injury, causing a reshuffle of the back line.
Strathmore continued to hold on to possession and make ground due to very poor structure and discipline from the opposition. Gary slotted over a 2nd penalty to reduce Linlithgow’s lead and at half time, the score was 6-7.Strathmore began the 2nd half with flare and it paid off as Calum MacLean pick the ball up from the base of a ruck and sprinted to cross the line. Even though the conversion was unsuccessful Strathmore lead the game once again 11-7. To add salt to the wound Gary put over a drop goal to stretch Strathmore’s lead to 14-7. Strathmore came close to scoring but with Callum Howie’s and Jamie Stewart’s tries disallowed as they were knocked on over the line and Stephen Greenhill stopped a metre short of the line, ment a converted try from Linlithgow put the guests level at 14-14. The full time whistle blew after a hard fought battle, the score 14-14. And both teams were in for a tense 5 minute wait as the rules were checked to see what happens in case of a draw. The rules state that the team who scored most tries win and since Linlithgow scored 2 tries to Strathmore’s 1, Linlithgow progressed through into the quarter finals. They face Wallace at home,All players put in a great performance, and Strathmore deserved to win as foul play from Linlithgow darkened the game. But more games after the New Year should put Strathmore back to winning ways.

Sponsorship
In other news:
Your coach is braving the elements in a few weeks time in order to take part in the Great Glen Way cycle, 73 miles from Inverness to Fort William in 1 day! Initially the trip was for 'fun' but it seemed a perfect opportunity to raise a little money to assist us in buying new strips. I will have sponsor forms ready next week and I will update the blog with details of how to contribute as soon as plans are in place so start raiding those piggy banks, selling those shares, and attacking those ISA's and lets get some money together to make us look as professional as our rugby is!

Match Fees
Just a quick one. In order to continue to offer hospitality to our home team opponents I will be asking each player to provide £2 for every home game. This will be in place of asking players to provide food as it is not always practical.
The cost of basic provisions is approximately £25 - £35 per game so I feel that if each player adds their match fees to the pot we will be able to cover each 'after match feed' as well as save some money for other costs such as travel etc for future away matches.
I hope this is a valid idea but if anyone has any concerns about this then please let me know asap.

Rugby Update
N.B - Can I just take this time to say that as one of the team coaches I am very impressed with how this new venture has taken off this year. We are much further on at this stage than I ever thought possible and that is a token of how positive and committed the team have been so far. Can I also thank Gus and Bob as well because without them we certainly would never have got to where we are at present!
After the mid-week battle against Bell Baxter we move on quickly to the next fixture. As most of you know we have drawn Dalziel High School in the 1st Round of the Bell Lawrie Plate competition. The details of the fixture are listed below:
Date: Thursday 8th November 2007
Kick Off: 4.30pm
Venue: Strathmore RFC
Please pass the word around to all possible fans because if we get the same excellent support from last week I am sure we can create a competition upset and gain even more recognition for the team throughout the rugby community in Scotland.
A message for players: Please be at the club and stripped by 4.15pm on Thursday as we are getting some press coverage for the match and the photographers from the papers should be there to get team photographs. There will also be a player meeting on Tuesday @ 11am in Room 128 for all players to attend (obviously not the Websters guys but I will get the messages relayed to you through Gus).
That is about it at present but I will be updating the blog ,where possible on a daily basis this week so keep reading for up to date information and lets look forward to the match on Thursday.

Players to arrive for match @ 4.30pm
Kick Off - 6pm

After match buffet - 7.45pm
All players should bring some form of buffet food for after the match. This need not be much but something like some crisps, sandwiches, sausage rolls etc would be very much welcomed as we want to show Bell Baxter our top notch hospitality.
Any player who cannot make the match should get in touch with either Mr Caddell or Mr Robb with plenty of notice so we can get positions and game plans organised.
I hope everyone is looking forward to the match and I think we could give the opposition a good run for their money. I have listed the fixtures below for the next rounds:

Lose to Bell Baxter - 1st Round Plate Vs Dalziel High School in Forfar on or before 10th November.

Results
A heartening display by the young Strathmore team saw them lose to a more powerful Montrose side this evening at Union Park. By all accounts both teams attempted to put on a good attacking game of rugby with the home side making the most of their opportunities. James Sorrie scored out wide in a well worked try for the away team and coach Mr Baldie is confident that the result will be turned over in the return match at Strathmore RFC (T.B.C)
Montrose U18's - 15 / Strathmore Schools U18's - 22
In what proved to be a very difficult and scrappy encounter the newly formed Strathmore Schools under 18 side narrowly beat of the challenge of the more experienced home side. Scores from Craig Thomson, David Ferguson, Calum Maclean, and Matt Allen showed that even in a match largely dominated by forward play, as soon as the team get an attacking chance the back line can finish the moves. This was helped hugely by the makeshift forward pack who fought hard all day and took the game to their opponents.
The re-run of this fixture is set for Wednesday 24th October at Strathmore RFC with the game due to kick off at 5pm. Come on down and support the teams as they look to build on the already positive start to the season.

Strathmore School Trophy - Match Report
Forfar Academy Vs Webster High School
Thursday 21st June 2007
MATCH REPORT – ‘Academy Rugby ends year on a high!’ by Mr Caddell
On a glorious Thursday 21st June 2007 the inaugural Strathmore Schools trophy was played for between Forfar Academy and close rivals Websters High School. Both teams were eagerly looking forward to this encounter, especially as it was the first occasion in 21 years that these two schools were taking part in a competitive fixture.
The game kicked off and throughout the 1st period Websters looked the most dangerous. Some strong running and even stronger tackling put the Academy team of the back foot and the well organised Websters team kept pressing. It came as quite a shock when Forfar scored on the counter attack. Scrum half Calum MacLean picked up from the base of the scrum and although a superb tackle from the Websters full back stopped the Academy player short, a great offload allowed makeshift flanker Duncan Hampton to score for the first points of the day. This try was converted by Centre Callum Howie.
As the 1st period continued Websters continued attacking and only some superb Forfar defence kept the Kirrie team from scoring. However, with all the defending the Forfar team were having to do it was inevitable that a score was going to come and it did just before the end of the period when a quick attack and change of direction allowed Websters and Strathmore RFC danger man James Kiely to crash over in the left hand corner. This was uncoverted.
The second period started very differently to the first with Forfar taking the game to Websters. This started with a 40 catch and sprint by flanker Hampton and then as a result of all the pressure Callum Howie took a quick tap penalty to crash over the line from close range. No conversion.
By now the heat was getting to most of the players and Websters started making their changes. Forfar however were limited to the players on the field due to player unavailability. This proved decisive, especially as a regenerated forward pack started to put the pressure on the Academy team with a quick try coming out of some strong work by the pack. No conversion.
The rest of the second period was played mainly in the midfield with some of the biggest tackles coming in from Academy players Grant McLaren and Shaun Ritchie and some clever changes of direction and slick passing by Websters number 10 Gary Robb.
By the time the 3rd period began both teams were beginning to tire and leave gaps in defence. This allowed a flurry of Forfar scores interrupted by some Websters points which made the game very entertaining for the neutral viewer as it proved neither team was willing to lose the game. In the end the Academy team edged out as 36-25 winners to win their first competitive game since 1986!
The occasion was concluded with the prize giving and buffet, generously supplied by the parents, in Strathmore RFC with the trophy being presented by local businessman and match sponsor Bill Bruce of Tannadice Trophies. Also presented were ‘Man of the Match’ awards to Forfar’s Duncan Hampton and Websters inspirational Stand Off Gary Robb.
The day was regarded as a massive success and the coaches and parents involved with school rugby are hoping that rugby in the Strathmore area will continue to flourish and develop and who knows, there maybe a Scottish International in the making?

Update
Both S1/S2 and the Senior teams are due to be playing at the same time with an estimated 3pm kick off time but keep checking as times may change over the next few days due when plans are finalised. Could all players make sure they get to training on Wednesday for as much of a final team run as possible.
Also, Mr Marshall is running a Strength and Conditioning programme every Thursday lunchtime from 1.10pm and some Tuesday evenings after school for senior players. With the intensity of the modern amateur game the requirement for high fitness levels is crucial so make the most of this opportunity and give it a go. Remember, regular attendance is the key to developing your fitness effectively and it can be a lot of good fun at the same time!
Anyone who has a question about the upcoming fixture or training please see me in Room 128 as soon as possible. I don't know about you guys but I am looking forward to giving the team from Kirriemuir a good run for their money!
See you at training!
